Bat Sizing Rules by age   201.525.1888

LEAGUE AGE or GRADE  BAT RULES
Little League 0 - 12  2 1/4" Barrel Diameter. No weight restriction, "L.L. approved" printed on bat. Leagues allow wood, but due to high performance of aluminum alloys, alloys are preferred. 
Town Rec Softball  6 - 14 Girls bats use a 2 1/4" barrel. No weight restriction.
Town Rec "Little League" 7 - 14 Some of these programs have little or no restrictions. "Big Barrel" (2 3/4" Senior League) may be allowed. 
Babe Ruth, Senior League  13 - 14 Many leagues permit the big barrel (2 3/4"). Weight restrictions allow -8.5 thru -5. Important - check you local league before you buy as new bat. Some 12 U allow big barrel. 
High School Freshman  - Senior Current rules are 2 5/8" and -3. These bats conform to National Federation of High School Bat standards (NFHS)  
College Freshman  - Senior All bats must conform to NCAA rules 2 5/8" barrel, -3, AND printed or stickered "BESR certified". 
High School, College, Fast Pitch Softball Freshman  - Senior Softball bats are 2 1/4" barrel. Bats will have "BPF 1.20" stamp and conform to Standard 2000, ASA 2000". 
Adult Baseball 18 +, 30+, 40+ Most leagues 2 5/8" barrel, -3. Some leagues allow -5, and some a 2 3/4" barrel. Just about every adult league allows wood. Some only wood. 
Adult Softball 18 + 2 1/4" barrel no weight restriction. Most men (slowpitch, modified, windmill) use 34", 26-30 ounce bat. Most women use a fastpitch bat 32-34", 20-26 ounces. 
NOTES:
Barrel size is referenced to the diameter of the widest part of the bat. The Minus (-) sign designates length to weight ratio. A 33/30 is a "minus" or negative 3 oz. bat.
